Fisherwoman

While studying at CCAC I first learned of the several different groups of women at the turn of the 20th century who were fishermen in Japan. From regular net fishers to the Ama, or pearl diver, I learned about this merchant class of woman who took their skills and crafts and marketed them in what was normally a male-dominated field.

The shapes were all derived from the different kimono and work robes they employed. I chose bold jewel tones to reflect the colors of nature from the seas the fished to the rolling hills where they repaired their nets. It’s a line that echos work wear for women but still exudes a softness.
